PLAN YOUR VISIT
Let’s connect and get to know each other.
You are welcome here!
We are glad you are checking us out! We’re guessing you probably want to know a little bit about what to expect when you visit on a Sunday. This page will help you prepare to visit on a Sunday. Those who visit often tell us the welcome they received kept them coming back. So we look forward to meeting you in person.
LOVE. PROCLAIM. SERVE. GROW.
Tell me more about First Pres.
First Pres is a Presbyterian church in the heart of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Founded in 1789, we have a long history of serving our neighbors in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
When you visit us, you’ll encounter a welcoming group of people who care for each other, our community and our world. We love Jesus, and we love because he first loved us. We’re not perfect, but we are seeking more and more to be like the Savior we trust.
What’s a typical Sunday like?
9 a.m. – Contemporary Praise & Worship (Sanctuary)
At this service you can expect modern songs with drums, guitars and other instruments. People will be wearing everything from jeans to suits, tucked and untucked. You’ll find people of all ages and walks of life. You can see each week’s worship guide, which is posted by Friday afternoons each week.
10:15 a.m. – Between the Services – Discipleship & Connection
Come meet some folks in one of our many Sunday school and discipleship classes. These classes are an opportunity to connect with others who are learning and growing in their faith. Sunday school classes are also available for children and youth.
11:15 a.m. – Traditional Worship (Sanctuary)
At this service, you can expect classic hymns. You’ll find individuals, couples, families and seniors gathered to worship. You can see each week’s worship guide, which is posted by Friday afternoons each week.
When and where do you meet?
We are located in historic downtown Harrisonburg, on the northwest corner of Court Square (see the map below for our location and parking locations). We have designated parking for guests, and you are welcome to use those spaces when you visit.
What should I wear?
We’re flexible. Some come in jeans, others in suits and ties. It really doesn’t matter to us. We’re simply glad to have you join us.
What about my kids?
We love having children in worship with us. We also have ways to engage with children in worship at our services. That could be in Children’s Church or through guided activities for them while they worship.
We offer a nursery (up to age 3) during the worship services and Sunday school, and these are held in our newly renovated children’s wing. All our children’s groups are run by our trained children’s ministry team.
I’m in college, and I need a ride. What should I do?
We have a team of people here at First Pres that are able to give rides to college students. If you need a ride to or from church contact Pastor Billy Craig and he will arrange a ride. And then be sure to either stay after worship or come early, depending on which service you attend, for our college brunch.
How else can I get involved?
A great first step is to text the word welcome to (540) 712-6440. We’ll then send you some information to get started. You also can sign up for our weekly e-news, which is a good way to get an idea of what we are about. Following us on Facebook and Instagram will also give you more of an idea of who we are.
Beyond these first steps, there are a lot of ways to know Jesus, grow in faith and go and tell the Good News. These include Sunday school classes, discipleship groups, service opportunities and more.
