One: The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon us: a spirit of right judgment and courage.

All: Strengthen us with your gifts of right judgment and courage, Holy Spirit.

One: The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon us: a spirit of knowledge and reverence.

All: Strengthen us with your gifts of knowledge and reverence, Holy Spirit.

One: The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon us: a spirit of wonder and awe in the presence of the living God.

All: Strengthen us with your gifts of wonder and awe as we worship and live today, Holy Spirit. Amen.

SING WHEREVER I GO / IT IS WELL

First Scripture Lesson: Ezekiel 37:9-14 (p.858)

Prayer of Confession

All: Gracious God, who pours out freely the gift of your Holy Spirit: we confess before you and to each other

that we have failed to recognize this most precious gift.  We have been satisfied with ordinary things,

suspicious of unfamiliar things, and blind to spiritual things. Burn in us this morning, Holy Spirit. We give you the places of our hearts that have been choked by the cares of this world. We give you our tiredness, our sin, our struggles with apathy. We await your fiery cleansing. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon (from Romans 8:1-2, 11)

One: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life sets us free from the law of sin and death. And if the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us,

God who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies through the Spirit, who lives in us.

  • How does Acts 1:4-5 connect with Acts 2:1-4?
  • Being filled with the Spirit (Acts 2:1-13) calls us as disciples of Jesus to a mission. What is that mission (see Acts 1:8)?  What is helping you to live on mission? What is an obstacle?

  • Share a time when you have been prompted or lead by the Holy Spirit?
  • What similarity is there between Jerusalem in Acts 2 and Harrisonburg in 2024 (see Acts 2:5, 9-11)? How should that affect our personal and First Pres.’ mission?
  • What fears or concerns do you have about sharing your faith? How does knowing God empowers you for this make a difference? What person or group do you know who can help one another in living out your faith?
