A prayer for a new school year
Written by Brad Jenkins

Many of our students are starting school during these few weeks. We pray for them and our teachers. We invite you to use this prayer in your individual and family prayer times this week.

God of all knowledge and wisdom,

Proverbs tells us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

So, as we begin this new school year, we begin by acknowledging that you are the source and the creator of all knowledge. And all anything we know or learn is meant to point us to you.

In learning about science or the world around us, we see your creativity and power.

In learning math, we see that you are a God of order and not chaos.

In learning about history, we see the sinfulness of people and the need we have for a savior.

In learning about art, we see your beauty.

All of our learning points to You.

So, God, help us in this new year of school to not just pay attention to the facts and stories we learn, but let us see the deeper You behind it all.

We pray, too, that we would commit ourselves to learning about you as we read scripture and pray. But keep us from learning for learning’s sake; may our learning about you transform us to follow you more closely and trust you more deeply.

Lord, protect all our children from the deceit of this world, from the things that would attempt to draw them from You. Fix our children’s eyes on Jesus, who is the Truth.

Mostly, teach our children and our families to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbors, all we encounter in our studies this year. May Jesus be proclaimed in all we do and all we say and in all we learn.

In Jesus’ name and for His glory,

Amen.
