Where to go if you need some perspective
Written by Pastor Jon Heeringa

There is something about sitting in the sanctuary and being in worship that puts things in perspective. Maybe you’ve experienced it, or maybe you need to. The Psalmist did. He starts Psalm 73 proclaiming God’s goodness, but then quickly adds a “but”: He almost slipped as he envied the prosperity of those who didn’t follow God and wondered how that could be.

“I entered the sanctuary of God,” he writes, and here is where he gained perspective. “Then I understood their final destiny.”

Lots of things in life can cause us to doubt God’s goodness. Yet in the “sanctuary,” as we spend time with God, we are reminded of His goodness and power. We are reminded everything is “all his” and “all“ includes both us and time itself, and he is working it all for good. That should bring us peace, gratitude, obedience and proclamation. Look at how Psalm 73 ends: “But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.”

With all this in mind, be with God and His people in God’s sanctuary this Sunday and be reminded of God’s goodness. That will give you perspective and help you live it out in all that you do and say.
