During the election, how are you praying: with joy or anxiety?
Written by Pastor Jon Heeringa

It’s Election week. How are you praying? With anxiety? Or joy?

Paul writes in Philippians 1:3 that he always prays “with joy.” That convicts me, because on my good days I can say I pray with gratitude, but most days I pray with anxiety and not with joy. With the election, I sense a lot of us are praying with some level of anxiety, but what would it look like for us to pray with joy?

When I think of praying with joy, I envision the joy in those who feel completely safe while they ride a rollercoaster or go whitewater rafting. So, to pray with joy, we have to feel totally secure in the truth that God has it all well in hand and will work it for good in ways beyond all we can ask or even imagine. If we feel secure in God. then we can pray with a sense of joyful excitement about the wild ride God is going to take us on to give us the very best.

This is the way I want to pray about the election – and everything else. I want to pray that regardless of how I feel about the short-term answer, the long-term answer is so very good, and it is going to be a fun ride with my heavenly Father in getting there regardless of the outcome. I want this for you, too, and am praying it even now with joy!
