God invites us to love
Written by Pastor Jon Heeringa

I’ve been thinking about love from a biblical point of view. Now, the Bible has a lot to say about love, and I’m particularly struck by the assertion of 1 John 4:16 that “God is love.” I’m struck by it because while it reads like a statement of fact, it is actually an invitation. Let me explain.

It is a statement of fact that I love my wife, but when I tell her “I love you,” I don’t simply want to be believed. No! I’m inviting her to say, “I love you, too!” Thus, when God claims to be love through Scripture, He is inviting you to say, “I love you too!”

Remember, as it says in 1 John 4:19, we love because He first loved us, but the key is for us to love Him back, and we can demonstrate that in both word and deed.

So, for now let me encourage you to speak (or sing) your love to God, who is love and who longs for you to love Him, too.
