I’ve been thinking about expectations and particularly about the kind of expectations we should have of one another in the Church. What sparked this line of thought was a video we watched as part of our officer training where we heard about a man who had been active in his church for his whole life but was perpetually grumpy. The sad thing was not that the man was perpetually grumpy, despite going through the motions of following Christ, but that no one in his church seemed to expect or call him to be transformed.
And this is sad because the scriptures do clearly call us to be transformed. Romans 12:2, for example, calls us to not conform but rather be transformed. Similarly, 2 Corinthians 3:18 says “we are being transformed into his image from one degree of glory to another…” So clearly, we should expect ourselves and one another to be engaged in the transformation process. A year from now we should be more Christlike than we are today. We should expect this – and hold one another accountable to this and help one another with this.
In the interest of helping, let me say we can’t just “try” to be transformed, we have to “train” for it. And faithful, full-throttled involvement in the church is a big part of that training, so join us on a Sunday and get connected.
