Finding refreshment through repentance
Written by Pastor Jon Heeringa

I hit this year running and am already tired, so I’ve been thinking about how to refresh and recharge.

Ideas like time on a trout stream come to mind, but I’m learning to distrust my thinking and to lean into God’s word instead. And God’s word offers a surprising prescription for refreshment. Peter, in Acts 3:19 ,says, “Repent then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”

I’m betting repentance isn’t on your list of things that you think will refresh you, but it should be. Now, the word “repent” means “changing one’s mind” and/or “turning around,” and either way, this is something we can and should do in prayer if we want to be refreshed.

So in your prayer life, take some time to hold your life up to God in light of his Word.

As you do, confess to God all the ways and places that you are not thinking or walking in His ways. Then ask Him to change your mind and turn you around and into a deeper relationship with Him.

When you do this you will be revived, because you will have both stopped doing things that drain you and tied into the only one who can refresh you.
