Full confession – I am a cry-er. I tear up watching TV and especially when watching movies that are sweet or sappy. I cried tears of joy when the Atlanta Braves won the World Series last year. My mom, who I get this trait from, and I have a rule at funerals: We don’t sit together for fear that we’ll run out of tissues.
The really sad thing for me, however, is that it’s hard for me to think of many times when I’ve cried because of how I’m experiencing God. Certainly I’ve had moving and powerful experiences along my faith journey. But these times somehow seem few and far between.
Except when I was taking the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course.
I openly wept more than once during this 15-week study of the heart of God’s mission and how we are called to be involved. I wept to hear stories about God redeeming unthinkable tragedy. I wept for the joy of God’s “big picture” – the redemption of all the peoples of the world. I wept out of conviction that I’d not been more fully activated for God’s Kingdom.
