I received a new smart/fitness watch for Christmas which meant I had to register and name the device. So, in honor of Psalm 90:12 I named it “Number Our Days.” I commend all of Psalm 90 to you but verse 12 asks the Lord to “teach us to number our days that we might gain a heart of wisdom.” Anyway, here on the cusp of a new year, a week when our own church family has experienced a number of deaths, we are reminded that indeed our days are numbered, so I’ve been thinking about what a heart of wisdom looks like.
There is a lot that could be said here but for me, two things stand out: The heart of wisdom is both hopeful and joyful.
We should be hopeful in the face of numbered days because we know the one who has numbered them. The Lord determines the number of our days, and He gets it just right. Because of who God is none of us dies before our time and while that can sound fatalistic, it is actually joyful. It is joyful because he is good and working all things for our good.
For Christians death just means rebirth into eternal life with him. So friends, hopefully and joyfully number your days.
