Praying for a breakthrough infection
Written by Pastor Jon Heeringa

The news cycle may have moved on from the phrase, but I’ve been thinking about and even praying for “breakthrough infections.” No, not for breakthrough infections of Covid, but rather for breakthrough infections of the Gospel.

You see, I think far too many people have been functionally vaccinated or inoculated to the Gospel. They have been given just enough of it not to really get it. They know about Jesus, but they don’t know him, not personally. He hasn’t infected every part of their lives and we can tell because they don’t have the symptoms (“by their fruit you shall know them.” – Matthew 7:20) and they certainly are not “contagious,” or we would see lots of new people coming to the Lord and filled with the Spirit.

Now, rather than judging these people, we pray for them and we seek to expose them to the Gospel. We make sure we have the Gospel by exposing ourselves to it where it is found in scripture, prayer, worship and Christian community, and then we go out and expose everyone we come into contact with.

So again, I’m praying for breakthrough infections and hope you will join me till, “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD” (Habakkuk 2:14).
