Read

Genesis 15:1-6

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

“Do not be afraid, Abram.
    I am your shield,
    your very great reward.”

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Reflect

When you are afraid of the future, go to God. Abram had so many doubts about his future and was worried about who would inherit his estate. This is after God tells him “Do not be afraid, I am your shield, your very great reward” v1. Like us, Abram still doubted but he took his worries to God. Even after such a powerful reminder from God of reassurance (Do not be afraid) and His power (I am your shield) God walks aside Abram and again uses the power of his creation (v5) to make his covenant with Abram about his future. When we are worried, go to God. He speaks to us (v1), walks alongside us (v5), and displays His power (v5).

Prayer

Dear God, thank your vast creation and infinite love. In times of doubt, draw us in. Let us look to Your promises and covenant you made through the life of Your son Jesus as reassurance and comfort.

Sing

O Come all Ye Faithful

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!
Come and behold him, born the King of angels;

Refrain:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

God of God, Light of Light eternal,
Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created, [Refrain]

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above:
“Glory to God, all glory in the highest!” [Refrain]

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be all glory giv’n;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; [Refrain]
